Did you always want to be an engineer?
I started making decisions on my own from a very young age. I had decided that I wanted to be a civil engineer and I would do whatever it takes for me to get that. In college I did A levels in Maths, Physics, Chemistry.
My main ambition was to become independent. I always wanted independence. I was a child who wanted my own pocket money. I could go anywhere and do what I wanted. When I came to the UK with my dad it was a different culture, different country and languages, but it’s helped me to achieve these dreams.
What made you choose this path?
What I love about construction is that every day you learn something new. One of the things that I love about construction is that it’s special – you’re building something where thousands, millions of people will be travelling through.
Where does your confidence come from?
I believe that I find my confidence within myself. Once you get to know yourself and you feel comfortable with yourself you know who you are and you know what you know – that’s the bottom line.
The idea that you can become anything you want seems so impossible that some people stop believing in themselves and take routes that others tell them, even if they don’t believe in it themselves.
