Michelle Wong

Senior Marketing Analytics Manager - Farfetch

Where do you work?

I work at Farfetch which is an online marketplace for luxury fashion and I’m leading the marketing analytics function and expanding that out.

How did you get into data and tech, and why?

I’ve always been interested in numbers and maths was one of my strongest subjects at school. I went to university to study economics, and there, econometrics was my favourite subject – I really loved proving and disproving hypotheses. I found an agency that used econometrics, I applied for a role and 2 weeks later moved from South Wales to London.

How do you feel about doing things differently?

Growing up as a minority meant I often did things my own way. I found maths and computing easy and I grew up feeling ok with the fact that my interests might be different from that of other kids. If I enjoyed something, I’d just do it anyway and I never did anything just to fit in.  I found what I was passionate about and pursued it, whether that was music, sports or spending my time absorbed in numbers.

How important is it to have other passions in your life?

One of my main passions outside of work is fitness. Exercise puts me on a high and boosts my confidence.

Let go of always wanting to be perfect.
How do you gain confidence?

Moving to London helped me because I had to be independent. Meeting friends from different backgrounds forced me to move out of my comfort zone and I’ve gained confidence from doing that, so then I keep going for more.

How do you lean on others to gain strength?

I’ve started being involved more and more in industry events and I’ve become much more aware in the last few years of how important it is for women to have a presence at these events. I don’t think there are enough female role models in the industry – especially at senior level, so it’s important that we pave the way

How do you feel about your success?

Success for me is the whole journey. If you’d have told me when I was back in Wales that I would move alone to London, work in a start-up and lead a team of my own, I wouldn’t have believed it. I’ve achieved a lot more than I thought I could. Being proactive about learning and improving myself has got me where I am today.

What advice would you give your teenage self?

To let go of always wanting to be perfect.

What is the toughest lesson that you’ve had to learn?

That you have to let go. I want to hit every bar but I’ve learnt that it’s not always possible. You don’t have to do everything. It’s all about finding the key parts that’ll make the big impact that you want.

What excites you about data and tech?

I enjoy understanding the reasons why and then generating the how. I love using data to understand what’s happening because that allows us to make actions and recommendations. Seeing the impact this has is what I really love about my work. The industry never stays static and you have to move along with it.

Can you tell us about the significant object that you’ve chosen?

I chose my jade pendant because one of the meanings behind this stone is courage. Sometimes when I’m doing things I’ll have moments of doubt so I’ll use my pendant as a reminder to believe in myself.
